Season Finale of FOX’s “House” Shot on Canon DSLR!
I found out about this via DP (Director of Photography) extraordinaire Philip Bloom’s website and it simply blew my mind. And it is big news for all you filmmaker-tech-heads out there! It appears the upcoming season finale of the FOX medical TV series “House” was shot entirely on the Canon 5D Mark2 DSLR.
This is big news as this is the first time a mainstream broadcast TV series has decided to shoot an entire episode on a widely available, prosumer HD-capable DSLR. Executive Producer and season finale director, Greg Yaitanes, and “House” DP Gale Tattersall were apparently so impressed with trial footage shot earlier with the Canon 5D Mark2 that they decided to film the entire season finale with it. The HD-DSLR revolution is definitely here when a major TV production decides to take a chance like this. Furthermore it will show that footage shot using HD-DSLRs like the 5D MarkII is indeed Broadcast quality.
May 17th is the air date of the “House” season finale. I know I’ll definitely be checking it out with great interest.
For anyone who don’t know who Philip Bloom is, he’s a very talented Director of Photography who is pioneering –along with equally talented Vincent Laforet– the use of the new HD-capable DSLR cameras as a filmmaking tool. Seriously, his films are awesome!

Very true. Since DSLRs have become basically a computer with a lens attached, then the obsolescence issue with computers will also apply to DSLRs.
I’ve come to the same conclusion now with these new HD-DSLRs as I did way back when I used to shoot stills with an actual film camera; camera bodies come and go, but lenses are forever. I’ve seen some amazing looking HD footage shot on old Canon EF and Nikon F mount manual focus lenses.
Also, the Nikon vs Canon debate still rages on. It’s funny how some things never change.
